Lopé National Park

Despite that we consider Loango National Park Gabon’s best park to visit and spot animals, Lopé National Park is another wildlife hotspot right at the heart of this African nation. It is Gabon’s oldest park and covers up to 4,910 sq km and has a predominantly rainforest terrain. To the north the park are the last remnants of grass savannas created during the last Ice Age.
The park can be reached either by car or by train (much more fun) from Libreville. In the wide savannas the lucky visitors can spot large groups of mandrills and in Mikongo Conservation Center, located in the middle of the rainforest, a Western Lowland Gorilla habituation project is going on with optimistic results in the last years. In 2007 Lopé National Park was designated a UNESCO natural and cultural World Heritage Site.
